Guide

How to rent your Copenhagen home while abroad

When you work or live abroad for several months, furnished rental can involve fewer turnovers than short stays while keeping the home in use. The right model depends on the length of your absence, rules applying to the property, flexibility around your return date and who can handle access, checks and problems locally.

This guide provides general information, not legal or tax advice. Rules and rates can change, and the outcome may differ based on your property, ownership type, agreement and association. Always check current official sources and seek individual advice where needed.

Choose the model from the actual period

Start with your earliest departure date, expected return and need for flexibility. One continuous stay of several months may suit medium-term furnished rental, while shorter available periods may point to short-term rental. The models have different operating needs and may be treated differently for Danish tax.

Confirm the right to rent

Check public rules, owner or cooperative association bylaws, house rules, the tenancy agreement, any landlord consent and insurance. Copenhagen notes that internal rules can be more restrictive than statutory day limits.

Prepare the home for a longer stay

  • Agree which private belongings remain.
  • Document condition, contents, meters and key count.
  • Describe maintenance, utilities and practical house rules.
  • Plan cleaning, linen and preparation before arrival.
  • Define who may order repairs or approve costs.

Arrange local operations while away

A local contact should be able to handle keys, access, questions, property checks and urgent incidents. Agree in advance which situations need your approval and how status and documentation will be shared.

Show the economics as a range

An estimate should reflect the property and exact dates, not a generic monthly figure. Show rental revenue, management fee, platform fee where relevant, cleaning, utilities, maintenance and tax as separate lines.
